She also was secretary-general of the "Organization for the Solidarity of the Peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America," a Cuban group founded in 1966 that supported independence struggles in developing nations. She served as the Cuban Ambassador to Vietnam and Cambodia. Ms. Hernandez was among five women who received human rights awards from Col. Moammar Gaddafi of Libya in 1997. The University of Havana awarded her an honorary doctorate in international relations in 2007.
