Col. Paul M, Cox (Ret.), 87, of New Bern died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001 at his home.

He was a native of Newport News, VA, graduating from Newport News High School in 1931. He furthered his education at NC State University graduating in June 1936.

He moved to New Bern as the Assistant Agricultural Extension Agent for Craven County. He later served the Farm Bureau as an agent and Agency Manager for the county. He served many years as the Civil Preparedness Coordinator for the county.

In 1982 Mr. Cox was elected Mayor of New Bern, also serving three terms as Alderman. Mrs. Cox was a lifetime member of the Lions Club and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir for over 60 years.

Mr. Cox graciously gave of his time through the 4-H club, mentoring area youth. He later volunteered for the Literacy Program on National Public Radio.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Centenary with the Rev. Danny Allen officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Cox was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Nettie Pinnix Cox. He is survived by one son, Dr. William Cox of Richmond, VA and one daughter, Dr. Ruth Cox of Birmingham, AL. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Jennifer of Richmond.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Church and other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lions Club, POB 15263, New Bern, NC 28562 or the Methodist Home for Children, c/o Centenary United Methodist Church, POB 1388, New Bern, NC 28562.

Mr. Paul was elected mayor of New Bern in 1981. He had great wit and sense of humor. Ms. Paul enjoyed acting in the New Bern Little Theater. He had appeared as Uncle Sam for the Fourth of July festivals and Bernie the Bear for Swiss Bear occasions. Ms. Paul arrived in New Bern on a bus and left many great memories.

Hospice Care and Home Health Care were provided for Mr. Paul and his wife, Ms. Nettie Pinnix Cox.
