Maj. Broom served with the Air Force from 1964 to 1985 with 780 combat flight hours as a navigator. On Nov. 26 2013, 45 years after being hit in the back by shrapnel in Vietnam, he received his purple heart during a presentation at North Henderson High School. Over 1000 students and faculty were present.
He is survived by his wife Nenita V. Broom, four children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday March 7 at the V.A. cemetery in Black Mountain NC. The Wilson Family Funeral Home in Black Mountain is now in charge of the arrangements.
