Hugh Louis McManus, Jr.

Even though he worked with General Electric as it assisted NASA on the Apollo moon missions, Hugh McManus' biggest accomplishment was fooling Christine Garland's friends.

After serving in Europe for the Army in WWII, Mr. McManus was working for GE in Cincinnati when he went to Christ Hospital for a kidney stone removal. While there, he fell for his gorgeous nurse and made his move.

"She refused to go out with him because she didn't date patients, his son, Bob McManus, said.

The intelligent Mr. McManus - he had a master's degree in physics from Louisiana State University - bided his time. After being released, he called the hospital and using an accentuated Southern drawl, convinced them he was her long-lost friend. That got him her home phone number. That led to a date, dinner and a show at the old Albee Theater. That led to 58 years of marriage.

"I thought he was pretty nice" his bride said Wednesday. "He was good looking. My mother liked him."

It was in WWII though, that he discovered another love. One day, his artillery unit was shooting at German jets but were told to stop because, unused to jets, they couldn't manage to aim far enough ahead of the planes to down them, Bob McManus said.

"When he found out there was an enemy they weren't allowed to shoot at, that got his interest", his son said.

He went to work for GE, choosing jet propulsion. After hearing President John Kennedy's "Ask Not" speech, Mr. McManus and his family moved to Daytona Beach, Fla., where the GE worker helped NASA on its Apollo moonshots. "He had office that overlooked the Daytona 500 car race and they watched the rocket launches from their yard, his son said.

After three years in Florida, the family returned to the Springfield Township home where Mr. McManus lived until his death Saturday, March 20, of Congestive heart failure and complications from pneumonia. He was 86.

Mr. McManus also is survived by son Hugh McManus III and four grandchildren.
