Kenneth L. "Pete" Peterson, 85, of Keokuk and formerly of Ft. Madison and Ottumwa, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 11 AM at his home in Keokuk, IA, from complications of a stroke in 2003.
He was born on January 10, 1929 in Ottumwa, IA to David John and Signa Swanson Peterson. Ken graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1947 and obtained various college credits through the years. On August 5, 1960 he married Patsy B. Saulmon of Morganton, NC at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ottumwa, IA. He was employed for twenty eight years by J.W. Edgerly Wholesale Pharmacy Company in Ottumwa where he was the purchasing agent for several years and was division manager when he resigned in 1975. Ken was then employed by Job Service of Iowa as an employment & training specialist until he retired in 1992. He served overseas in the Army 28th Division from 1951-1953. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Ft. Madison and also several various professional service clubs through the years including Rotary, International Assn. of Public Employees and others. His real love since 1975 has been the Lion's Club, where he held various offices including Club President, Zone Chairman & District Governor. He was honored by the Lions for his dedicated humanitarian service with the Melvin Jones Fellowship (the highest international award), the Warren Coleman Award (highest in the state) and the International President's Commendation among others. Ken was noted for his never wavering devotion to family and friends. He liked to travel and enjoyed spending winters in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Peterson of Keokuk, IA; one son, Kevin (Angie) Peterson of West Point, IA; a daughter, Tina (Barry) Jens of Chicago, IL; two grandchildren, Keith Peterson and Alicia Peterson of West Point, IA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald (Wilma) Peterson; and one sister, Ruth (Lloyd) Marble.
Friends may call after 2 PM on Monday, March 3, 2014 at King-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory in Ft. Madison where the family will receive friends from 5-7 PM. The funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ottumwa which is located at 295 Shaul Avenue, Ottumwa. The Revs. Mathew Andersen and Steve Rasmussen will officiate. The family will receive friends from 11 AM until noon just prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa with military rites performed by the Ottumwa American Legion & VFW. There will be a luncheon at the church following the burial. A memorial has been established for the Iowa Lion's Foundation and online condolences may be left at the King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory website.
