William Samuel Mainer, 86, died at 7:45 yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs Mabel E Beecham, 2512 Canterbury road, following an illness of a month.

He was born at Moorehead, Ky, but had lived in Columbia for 15 years. He was a Baptist.

He is survived by four daughters, Mrs Beecham, Mrs Pearl Mainer Matheny of Mentone, Alabama, Mrs Myrtle Mainer Henning of Dayton, Ohio, and Mrs Lorena Mainer Rush of Middleton, Ohio; a son, Mortie Mainer; seven granddaughters, 8 grandsons, and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 o'clock this afternoon from the West Columbia Baptist Church. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

[pallbearers omitted] transcribed from The State newspaper by Anna Richter1st wife was Maggie Florence (Matheny) Manier who he married in Birmingham, Al on the 18th of September 1885. She died March 9, 1909 in Ringgold, Ga. at a plantation where William or "Sam" was then working. No grave information at this time.

Children with Florence: Mabel, Carl, Pearl, Myrtle, Ruby (who died in childhood - no grave info), Lorene, Blanche, and Buddy (Theodore).

2nd wife was Jennie (Dehart) Alfrey; he married her in 1915 in Rowan Co, Kentucky, as per 1930 census. Sam had one child with Jennie, James Manier (born 1921).

Although there seems to be no divorce record for Jennie and William, in old age he lived with his eldest daughter Mabel, who filled out his death certificate, incorrectly stating that his father was Pleasant Manier (a nonexistent person: Pleasant MATHENY was Mabel's great grandfather on her mother's side).

Actually, William Samuel Manier's father was Thomas Chelton Manier and his mother was Eliza/ Elizabeth A. Saylor Brown.
