Enlisted July 28, 1862 at Lockport, NY; mustered in as Corp 129th NY Inf (the 8th NY HA in Dec 1862); promoted SGT 25 Feb 1864; captured 25 Aug 1864 at Reams Station, VA; died of disease. (NYS Arch and Niagara Falls Newspaper).

Lockport Daily Journal May 1865-Death of Sergeant Walter Martin.

Cenotaph memorial at Greenwood Cemetery, Wilson, Niagara, NY. Per Kathy, FAG #47171935:
"Ironically, and very sadly, Walter is listed in the 1865 New York State census with his family in USA, NY, Niagara, Wilson, as being in the Army. That census was taken as of 28 Jun 1865. His name is crossed out. It appears that his family was not aware that he had died in February."
