US Congressman. Born near Claysville, Pennsylvania, he was educated by a private tutor, became a teacher at the age of sixteen and later was principal of the Claysville public schools. During the Civil War, he served in Company H, 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, being mustered in on March 13, 1865, and being mustered out on June 29, 1865. After the war, he pursued agricultural pursuits in Claysville, Pennsylvania and was school director and justice of the peace. In 1892, he contested as a Democrat the election of Andrew Stewart to the Fifty-second Congress, was elected and served until his death at age 64 in Claysville, Pennsylvania.
