David M. L. Alchin, 71, of rural Neoga, passed away at 10 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2011, at his residence at Lake Mattoon.

He was born August 9,1939, in Dearborn, Mich., the son Glen V. and Anna Elizabeth "Betty" Strauss Alchin. He was a retired Navy veteran and, after his retirement, he became a civil engineer for Shelby County. He was a life member of the Eagles Club of Mattoon and a member of the Neoga American Legion of Neoga. He enjoyed living at Lake Mattoon. He was the Eagle of the Year in 2006, and he enjoyed cooking breakfast for the Eagles Club, visiting with his friends and neighbors and helping others.

Mr. Alchin is survived by three sons, David (Cynthia) Alchin of Bargersville, Ind., Steve Alchin of Indianapolis, Ind., and Jeffery Alchin; two step-sons, Robert W. (Carolyn) Miller of Mattoon and Larry Boyken Jr. of Odessa, Texas; one step-daughter, Deborah (John) Cowger of Mattoon; one sister, Norene Mae Williams of Inkster, Mich.; two brothers, William Dennis Alchin of Gladwin, Mich., and Delano Spencer Alchin of Deltona, Fla.; and several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Glynora L. "Glyn" Durbin Alchin, whom he married on November14, 1966, in Dearborn, Mich.; his parents; and three sisters, Mary Maruszewski, Josephine Lozano and Thelma (Skiba).

Services were held Monday, March 14, at the Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home of Neoga, with the Rev. Richard Coen of Neoga officiating. Recordings of "Amazing Grace", "Precious Memories" and "Anchors Aweigh" were played. The pallbearers were John Cowger II, David Alchin, Don Cane, Robert Miller, David Miller and Larry Boyken. Burial was in Neoga Memorial Cemetery with military services conducted by the VFW Post # 4325 of Mattoon.
