THEODORE CRANSTON (1939-2012)
Attorney donated time and talent to benefit others.
Following in his father's footsteps at the prestigious law firm Gray, Cary, Ames & Frye, Theodore "Ted" Cranston embarked on a legal career that earned him national recognition in the field of estate planning and accolades as a leader in community service to San Diego.
Mr. Cranston died Tuesday evening after a struggle with cancer. He was 72.
He served as a trusted adviser to many leading families in San Diego throughout his career and acted as a mentor to many of the attorneys currently managing the law firm, now DLA Piper, one of the largest business law firms in the world. He remained a partner at the firm with a reduced workload until his death.
Mr. Cranston graduated from San Diego High School, Stanford University (Phi Beta Kappa), and Stanford Law School (Order of the Coif, Law Review). He joined Gray Cary in 1964.
Similar to his father, Jack Cranston, who had been the presiding partner of Gray Cary, Cranston rose in his practice to become the managing partner from 1989 through 1992, and served for years on the firm's executive board.
"They worked together at Gray Cary for almost 30 years and shared an association that each treasured dearly," said Hal Cranston, Ted's brother. "Not surprisingly, they shared many common traits such as honesty, integrity, trust and community service."
He was a nationally known expert in trusts and estates, was a fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and served on the California State Bar's Executive Committee for Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law Section.
"Ted played a critical role in the growth of the firm, yet always kept in sharp focus the importance of giving back to the community," said Jay Rains, global co-chair of DLA Piper's Corporate and Finance practice.
One of Mr. Cranston's protégés, firm partner Ellen Whelan, said he stood behind her and was a champion of her career.
"I was probably not an easy associate to bring along. I'm a quadriplegic in a wheelchair," Whelan said. "If you work hard, commit yourself to being as best a lawyer as you can be and commit yourself to the community, Ted will champion you."
She recalled that about five years ago, when she was among a group of lawyers struggling to come up with a new way to handle a problem, he suggested a novel approach.
"Ted recommended we all go to a movie, and off we went," she laughed. "The next day, we were brilliant. It's become an annual tradition."
Mr. Cranston filled much of his down time with pro bono work and community involvement.
"He was a pillar of our community who dedicated himself to enhancing San Diego and the lives of others," said Ward Gill, CEO of the San Diego Symphony.
Mr. Cranston was president of the La Jolla Playhouse Board and co-chaired its capital/endowment campaign. He believed strongly in the work of the Salk Institute and committed himself to its board. He also served on boards and committees at Girl Scouts of San Diego, San Diego Center for Children, San Diego Symphony, Stanford Law School, San Diego Foundation, San Diego Repertory Theatre, Timken Museum of Art, San Diego Legal Aid Society, San Diego and La Jolla Rotary clubs, School of Theology at Claremont, and National Conference of Christians and Jews.
For those of us who had the privilege to work closely with him, Ted was a consistent champion of principled decision-making, and someone who cared deeply," said Terry O'Malley, co-chair of DLA Piper in the Americas. "He was a champion of the underdog, and he was someone you could trust absolutely to do the right thing in even the most difficult circumstances. His acts of kindness are too numerous to catalog, and we are all better for having had him in our lives."
