WILSON -- Royce Ray Matthews, 73, died Wednesday, August 8, 2007.

He was born on May 16, 1934 in Wilson, NC the son of the late Julius Ray Matthews and Thelma Estelle Tomlinson.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Matthews.

Mr. Matthews was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church. He retired from the State of North Carolina and the City of Wilson. Served in the Army as military police; and served with the honor guard for President Eisenhower.

He is survived by his wife, Nona C. Matthews of the home; sons, Ricky Matthews and wife, Cindy of Flower Mound, TX, Jay Matthews of Jane Lew, WV; brothers, Marvin and wife, Marie of Wilson, James Matthews and wife, Joan of Gainesville, VA; sister-in-law, Margie Sullivan of Wilson; stepdaughters, Linda Godwin of Cedar Grove, Sandra Humble and husband, Randy of Jamestown, NC; stepson, James C. Godwin, Jr. and wife, Nettie of Greensboro; grandchildren, Misty Dunbar, Kelsey White and Abby White; step-grandchildren, Paul Taylor, Julie Vaughan, and Alex Godwin; great-grandchildren, Rachel Vaughan and Michael Vaughan.
