J.H. Chesney, 69, Dies Suddenly; Heart Failure

Pioneer Citizen Expires At Home After Illness Of Only Five Hours.

James Hamlin Chesney, 69, retired, Civil War veteran and pioneer resident of Butler county, died suddenly of heart failure at 1 o'clock Friday morning after five hours' illness, at his home 729 West Third avenue.

Mr. Chesney was born at Abington, Ills., May 23, 1847. He came to Kansas in 1872 and lived until 1886 at Pleasanton and Pittsburg when he came to El Dorado. He was married in 1869 to Elizabeth White, in Illinois. Mrs. Chesney died in El Dorado July 10, 1898.

Mr. Chesney was educated in Abington and later graduated from a Chicago business college. He served in the Civil War and was an active member of the local G.A.R.

Six years ago Mr. Chesney suffered an attack of apoplexy and his health had been more or less impaired since. Thursday he was about town the same as usual, but in the evening he became ill and it was thought he had acute indigestion.

He is survived by a daughter, Miss Edith Chesney, and two sons, Robert Chesney, of El Dorado and Edwin R. Chesney, of DeGraff. His mother and a sister reside at Abington, Ills., a brother, in Kansas City, one in California and another in Arizona.
