Melvin Steele Brooks, Sr., 84 of Wharncliffe, West Virginia, departed this life on Thursday, December 08, 2011, at his residence.

Born on January 27, 1927, at Worth, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Charles James and Lera Mae Hall Brooks.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters: Lillie Owens and Myrtle Spears and four brothers: Clinton, Homer, Herbert and Buren Brooks.

Melvin was the previous owner of several businesses, including Brooks Funeral Home of Gilbert. Brooks Funeral Home closed in the early 1980's after Mounts Funeral Home opened in Gilbert, West Virginia.

Melvin was a former President of the Mingo County Board of Education; Chief Deputy Boxing Commissioner for the State of West Virginia; Probation and Parole Officer for West Virginia. Melvin served as Mayor of Delbarton, West Virginia and was a former member of the Delbarton and Gilbert Kiwanis Clubs.

He was manager of M. T. Ball Funeral Home for Justine W. Ball, the widow of M. Tabor Ball. M. T. Ball Funeral Home closed in 1992 after serving fewer than 15 families in 1991.

Melvin was a practicing Funeral Director for sixty years. He was a graduate of The Cincinnati School of Mortuary Science. He was a veteran of the US Navy on the carrier U.S.S. Antietam in the Pacific during World War II.

Melvin was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to love and cherish the memory of Melvin and to mourn his passing include his loving wife of sixty-one years, Mary Tosti Brooks, his two sons, Melvin (Charleta) Brooks, Jr., of Wharncliffe, and Randy Brooks of Man; his three grandchildren, Nicole (Brock) Mounts, Nick (Elizabeth) Brooks, and Austin Brooks; his two great-grandchildren, Skyler Brook Mounts and Dylan Ryan Brooks; along with a host of nieces and nephews and other dear family and friends.

Friends gathered with the family at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, December 10,2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The funeral was held on Sunday, December 11, 2011, at 1: 00 p.m. at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ricky Endicott and Rev. Diamond Carter officiating.

Interment followed in the Hatfield Cemetery at Sharon Heights of Hampden, West Virginia. Melvin was carried to his final resting place by Ray, Anthony and Louie Tosti, Ricky and Freeland Blankenship, Jay Lockard, John Stevens and Brock Mounts.

Honorary Pallbearers were Joe Blankenship, Huey Miller, Steve Adkins, Howard Persinger, Bill Peak, Joe Hatfield and Maurice Tabor "Chip" Ball.
