Obituary for George Edward Franklin

George Edward Franklin, 90, died Feb. 12, 2012. He was born on the Franklin Ranch in southeast Llano County on Aug. 18, 1921, to Percival William Palmer and Otille Giesecke Franklin.

He attended school in Llano and worked cattle during the summer and on weekends. He was an excellent cowhand and an outstanding shot. He graduated from Llano High School as class president in 1939. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied art and theater and served as a student government representative.

During a break from school, he headed west on a 1939 Indian motorcycle he bought used for $50. In Pasadena, Calif., he befriended playwright Tennessee Williams.

He returned to Texas at the breakout of World War Il and attended Army Air Corps pilot training, but because of asthma could not serve. He joined the USO and traveled throughout the European Theater, producing entertainment for the troops. At the end of the war, he returned home and traveled across the United States, working in restaurants, acting in local theaters and writing plays.

He became familiar with virtually every major creative individual in the New York art and theater scenes of the 1950s. He double-dated with Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe - with whom he danced on at least one occasion. He talked motorcycles with Steve McQueen and would reminisce about Central Texas with Robert Redford.

In the late 1950s, when French model and actress Ninon Lacorne moved to New York, he was her only contact in the city - the two met in Paris. They forged a lifelong bond. In 1961, a son, Oliver, was born to the couple; in 1964, daughter Jennifer followed; and in 1967, daughter Georgia Ada Franklin was born in Fredericksburg.

In 1971, the couple moved to Austin and started the Austin Want Ads. They spent time on their Llano County ranch every holiday and most weekends. After her death in 1986, he returned to his old passion - theater. Within a few years, he had resurrected his writing career and began acting again. He later moved to Llano and spent his days entertaining his grandchildren, reading and writing.

A graveside service is 2 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Walnut Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Dave Sugeno officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Walnut Creek Cemetery Association, 7566 Smith West Ranch Road, Round Mountain, TX 78663 or KLRU television.

Condolences may be sent to whhfuneral1 @verizon.net or made at www.whhfuneralhome.com.

Arrangements by Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Homes, 307 E. Llano, (325) 247-4300.
