Edward Ralph Hill, who was known by his middle name “Ralph”, was born in 1907 in Lafayette (now Dixie) County, Florida, to Charles Octavous Hill (1865-1942) and his second wife Nancy Dora Copeland (1876-1938).
Ralph was a career railroader, employed in the maintenance of way department of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, primarily in northern Florida and southern Georgia.
He married Ruby Estelle Nettles (1914-2010) in 1930 and together they had nine children: Marjorie Catherine (1931-); Kermit Stacey (1935-); Kemple Edward (1937-1938); Vondora (1940-2008); Marie Elena (1945-); Terrence Copeland (1946-); Sandra June (1947-); Gilbert Ralph (1948-); and Reitzel Shandra (1950-).
After retiring from the railroad, Ralph and Estelle moved from Tifton, Georgia, to Perry, Florida, where he died in 1987.
