His uncle, Private Burton Pennant LOOSE, served during the First World War with the 9th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment; he was killed in action on 15 April 1918 and is remembered with honour at the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium.
~~His name is included in the Commemorative Roll, in Australia:-the names of the people on the Commemorative Roll are in a book located in the Commemorative Area of the Australian War Memorial.
(The Commemorative Roll records the names of those Australians who died during or as a result of wars in which Australians served, but who were not serving in the Australian Armed Forces and therefore not eligible for inclusion on the Roll of Honour. It includes those Australians who died while members of Allied Forces, the Merchant Navy, philanthropic organizations attached to the forces, or as war correspondents or photographers.)
~~The following information was kindly provided by Richard Gray:-
"The inscription on the headstone moved me so much that I decided to research more into Basil's history; it was clear that someone loved him dearly.
~~He was born in Granville, New South Wales on 21 August 1914. An engineer by trade, he joined the RAF and was granted a short service commission on 19 August 1939, being granted the rank of Acting Pilot Officer, on probation for active service for six years. He was then graded as P/O on probation on 4 February 1940, his rank of P/O being confirmed on 26 June 1940.
~~He served some time at Bircham Newton, a few miles from Brancaster; from there he was posted to RAF Leuchars in Scotland. On 11 Jan 1941 at 01.17hrs he took off in a Hudson N7298, with three fellow airmen, for a night time operational flight. On their return to base the crew lost its way and the Hudson crashed into high ground on Warren Moor, Kirkdale, North Yorkshire. Due to the severe weather conditions of that winter they were not found until 16.30hrs on the following day; they were found huddled under the Hudson's wing. The four man crew survived the crash, but soon died of their wounds and exposure to the cold."
~~The four RAF airman who perished following this aircraft accident were-
Pilot Officer Basil Lincoln 'Peter' FOX (Pilot),
Sergeant Keith Barnet FILES (Pilot/Navigator),
Sergeant William Robert MARTIN (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner) and
Pilot Officer John McDonald Scott WYLIE (Air Gunner).
