He was the son of the late James Edward and Bertie Ballard Anders. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Roy C. Anders and special parents: Tate W. and Bernice Whitaker Haynes.
Fred graduated from West Buncombe High School and attended Cecil’s Business College before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps. during World War II. Upon his father’s death in 1942, he was honorably discharged to return home and manage the family’s Oak Hill Dairy in Leicester, which was deemed a more valuable service to his country. He continued to operate the dairy until 1973. He then worked for the US Postal Service, and later joined the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation of Soil, from which he retired after 30 years of service.
Fred was a gifted baseball player and played industrial league ball from 1948-1956. During this time, he played with the Valley Springs Springers as a starting pitcher. For six of the nine years he played, the team finished first in the Buncombe County League. In later years, his favorite pastime was watching his grandchildren play softball and baseball. He never missed a game and was a regular at practice. Fred was a loving husband, father and grandfather, affectionately known by his grandchildren as “Pop Pop.”
