Gainesville - Alfred Jacob Furnweger, 92, of Gainesville, Florida, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013, in Gainesville. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Bettye Jane Bauer Furnweger.
Al was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 23rd, 1921 to Frances Meindl and Jacob Furnweger and was the oldest of three children. During World War II he was stationed in Washington, DC where he met and married the love of his life, Bettye.
Al was part of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the FDR administration and afterwards offered his services in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In his 26 years in the Navy he served on a variety of ships including the battleship USS Iowa and the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. He was also stationed at a number of bases including those located in the states of Washington, New York, California, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Florida. His service also included two tours of duty in Japan. In addition to serving in World War II, he also served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant commander (LCDR) and settled in Gainesville in 1969.
He enrolled in the University of Florida and completed his undergraduate degree in Business and his Masters and Specialist degree in Education. He was hired at Santa Fe College where he developed and taught business courses for several decades. After contributing to the education of thousands of students, he had his second career retirement in the early1990's.
In addition to his life's work, he was an active volunteer in the Gainesville community. He served as a volunteer on the Board of Directors for the Florida Credit Union in the 1980's even assuming the duties of acting president during a management crisis. He also volunteered for the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) where he mentored and counseled hundreds of prospective business owners in addition to serving a term as the president of the local Gainesville chapter. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and leader for many years.
Al was a loving husband and a devoted father and is survived by his sons, Charles of Fremont, CA and Wayne of Clarkesville, GA.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 6, 2014 at 11 AM in the Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church, 4000 NW 53rd Avenue, Gainesville, FL 32653. Interment with full military honors will be at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
