While engaged in conversation this afternoon at about 4 o'clock in the barn on the Orr place, one mile east of town, Ben Thomas and Frank Simpson were struck and instantly killed by lightning. The men were in one of the stalls in the barn when the lightning struck the cupola of the barn and a part of it found its way to where the two men were standing and accomplished its deadly sin.

At the time the lightning struck, Taylor Thomas, brother to Ben, was lying in the mow above and after the shock immediately went below and discovered his brother lying in the gateway between the manger and the wall. Picking him up, he fancied that he still lived and crossing over to where Simpson lay he at once discovered that his life was extinct.

Mr. Thomas was a former resident of Goodland, Ind., but moved here about two years ago and was engaged in farming and cattle raising on the Orr farm. His wife and daughter, May, survive him.
