Edna was born in Temple, Georgia on May 25, 1922, the daughter of the late Cora Hogue Shockley and Stevie Dean Shockley.
During World War II, Edna worked at Bell Aircraft, today known as Lockheed Martin. She also sold world book encyclopedias for a number of years. Edna especially enjoyed working side by side with her husband, Innis (I.N.) Neal Gilland with the family garden and cutting the hay on the farm. Edna was extremely devoted to her family and enjoyed being a homemaker.
She loved her community and lived her entire life in the Flat Rock area. She was a dedicated, loyal servant of Jesus Christ and a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. She was the picture of a Proverbs 31 woman. Edna worked as a Teacher's Aide for a number of years at Sandhill Elementary, Villa Rica Primary and Winston Elementary. After her retirement, she worked almost daily as a substitute teacher until she was eighty five years old and her husband wanted her home with him.
Survivors include their four children and their spouses, Neal Gilland, Shelia Sidney, Carmen Stokes, and Sonya Swafford, all of Villa Rica, Georgia; sister, Sara Meigs, Temple, Georgia. Seven grandchildren, four grandchildren-in-law, eight great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty three years, Innis Neal Gilland on September 12, 2010 and her parents, Cora Hogue Shockley and Stevie Dean Shockley and all but one sibling.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 12, 2015, 3 p.m. at Flat Rock Baptist Church in Villa Rica, Georgia with Dr. Stephen Peeples and Dr. Wayne Jenkins officiating. Music will be provided by Steve Turner.
Interment will follow the service in Powell Chapel Cemetery. The pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
