Mary is a daughter of Frances Sara Benoist and William Walton Bates, their sixth child. She was delivered at 1:00 p.m. by Midwife, Mrs. E.L. Bridges of Brady.

She married (1) Edward Mey Farley on 2 August 1941 at Val Verdi County, Texas. They had one son and two daughters and divorced.

She married (2) James Kenneth "Jim" Gates on 26 December 1952 at Brady, McCulloch, Texas. They exchanged vows under the direction of Sam W. Thomas, Justice of the Peace.

They had one son, James Kenneth "Jimmy" Gates, Jr., born in 1956. He predeceased his mother after a long battle with cancer.

Mary was an excellent "southern" cook and also spent many hours knitting and crocheting items for neighbors, friends and family. For decades, she faithfully wrote hundreds of letters to family members and lifelong friends. Read the bio of her husband, Jim, to see her other talents, from horsemanship to long haul trucking!

She remained active up until the last few months when pancreatic cancer suddenly took her strength at 89 years.
