Fred the son of Helen L. Wilkins and step-son of John H. Wilkins of Norfolk VA entered service (Selective Service) in the US Marine Corps on January 5 1966 in Richmond VA. In Vietnam he was assigned to and serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

In the beginning of June the Battalion participated in a search and destroy operation in conjunction with Operation CIMARRON in the Cam Lo, Gio Linh Districts of Quang Tri Province. On June 1, some six kilometers southwest of Con Tien in the vicinity of Hill 94 Company L became heavily engaged with a large NVA force. The enemy was in concealed covered bunkers with prepared fields of fire for their crew served weapons the Marines faced. The battle lasted throughout the day and into the night. Eleven men of Company L were killed in the fire fights with many more wounded, LCpl Lee was one of the casualties, he was killed in action by fragmentation wounds from a hostile explosive device.
