Joan K, (Tuthill) Hamner Joan K, (Tuthill) Hamner passed into Glory on the other side, January 19, 2012. MS Hamner was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on Feb 19, 1925 where her father was Commandant of the Naval Forces in Pearl Harbor. She was the daughter of Capt. Edward C. Hamner, Jr. USN, and Dorothy Whitney Kirk, both of whom were longtime residents of Lynchburg. Her only brother was Lt. Henry Rawlings Hamner, USN, who died in WW II defending his ship from enemy attack, the USS Howorth. Her father and brother were both graduates from the US Naval Academy and are interned in Arlington National Cemetery. Formerly from Lynchburg, VA, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Joan Carroll Tuthill. She is survived by her three sons, Edward Hamner Tuthill, William Carroll Tuthill and Peter Hamner Tuthill. She also had 13 grandchildren and over 10 great grand- children. MS Hamner resided in Lynchburg most of her life where her 3 oldest children attended E. C. Glass HS. She moved to Richmond, VA in 1970 when her youngest son Peter graduated from George Wythe HS. For the past 5 years she reside in Mechanicsville, VA.
MS Hamner's ashes will be buried in the Hamner family plot in Springhill Cemetery in Lynchburg, VA on Saturday February 18, 2012. Graveside service is scheduled for 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be designated to Bon Secours Hospice online at www.bsvaf.org/supporthospice, or mailed to the Bon Secours Richmond Foundation, 5875 Bremo Road, Suite 305, Richmond, VA 23226
