Mr. Laban Marshall Abernathy, 90, of 17 Brighton Place, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 at his residence.

The funeral for Mr. Abernathy will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002 at the Forbis &Dick North Elm Chapel. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro.

Mr. Abernathy was born to the late Harvey and Anna Abernathy in Cheatham County, Tenn. on Aug. 26, 1912. He retired from E.U. du Pont after 42 years of service and was a member of Ashland City United Methodist Church, Ashland City, Tenn. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason of the Jere Baxter Lodge No. 742, F&AM, Nashville, Tenn. He was a member since 1955.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Sarah Simpkins Abernathy; daughter, Janice Abernathy Smith and husband, Fred, of Greensboro; grandson, Michael S. Smith and wife, Lisa, of Columbia, S.C. and great-grandson, Colson Marshall Smith; sisters, Anna Mae Simmons of Richmond, Va. and Louise Marable of Brentwood, Tenn. and brother, H.V. Abernathy of Madison, Tenn. He was predeceased by a sister, Frances Abernathy.
