Born to James Bohan and Mary Ann Crosson in New Brunswick, Canada on May 12, 1900, she immigrated to Maine around 1919. She married her husband John Cassidy on October 14, 1925 in Bangor and they had four children together. At the time of the marriage, her marriage license states that she was working as a waitress.

Cancer was widespread throughout the family and ultimately was the cause of death for her, her husband, and all four of their children, including their son Paul who died before he was 18 from leukemia. All of their children died before they were 50.

The spelling of her maiden name has varied, with it seeming to be "Bohan" on her parents' tombstones and her marriage license. On her death certificate and obituary though, the maiden name is listed as Bowen.

At the time of her death, she was survived by her husband, three of her children, six sisters: Mrs. Charles McAloon, Miss Emma Bowen, Mrs. John Hayes, and Mrs. George O'Donnell (all of Bangor), Miss Clara Bowen of San Francisco, and Mrs. Merl Shannon of Easton, one brother Colman Bowen of Portland, two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
