Joseph Tracy Coleman, Jr. was my oldest brother. Within the family, he was commonly known by his middle name. Tracy was the first child of Joseph Tracy Coleman, Sr. and the former Theresa Ann Conaway, who both hailed from Bronx, New York. Tracy was born across the Hudson River, in Fort Lee, New Jersey. After surviving childhood on the mean streets of The Bronx, Tracy joined the Army in 1970, doing his basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana and spending time at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, before serving his country in the infantry in Vietnam. He left military service in 1979, receiving an honorable discharge and settling in San Diego, California. Tracy spent most of his civilian life there, working for various companies in the security industry. He had one brief marriage and left no children.
