PORTLAND -- Herbert 'Herbi' R. Adams, 87, of Wolcott Street, Portland, a 35 year employee for the City of Portland Parks Department, died on Sunday morning at Maine Medical Center with his family by his side.

He was born in Portland, the son of Frederick and Minnie E. Batchelder Adams, where he attended local schools. Herbert would enlist into the U.S. Army in 1943 where he served with the 7th Army, 438th Div, 6 Battery D with invasion of Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes, Northern France and Central Europe. His unit was involved in the liberation of the Nordhousinger Concentration Camp.

Herbert was employed by the City of Portland for 35 years in the Park & Recreation Department where he was the supervisor at Evergreen Cemetery until his retirement in 1987. Herbert always took pride in the cemetery grounds. Even after his retirement he would visit the cemetery on a weekly basis to feed the birds while enjoying the serenity of the surroundings.

He enjoyed day trips to Kennebunk, Ogunquit, and Wells Beach. His garden was also a special place for him to grow his tomatoes. He also enjoyed taking walks at the Maine Mall with his wife three days a week where he enjoyed meeting many friends.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Roxanne M. Adams, who died in 1974; six brothers, Ralph, Gene, Walter, Albert, Fred and Robert Adams, and his three sisters, Jessie and Gladys Norberg, and Daisy Ashley Collard. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Louise M. (Gray) Adams of Portland; his brother-in-law, Howard and his wife Marjorie Gray of Scarborough; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at 11 a.m., at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, with the Rev. Mark Rustin officiating. Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family at Keeley the Katerer, Warren Avenue, Portland, for a time of fellowship and food.
