He was born in Massena, New York on July 31st, 1927 to Agnes and John Whalen.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 ½ years, Jean Contridoff Whalen; son, Jeff Whalen; granddaughter, Taylor Jean Snyder; son-in-law, Ken Snyder; brothers, Bill Whalen of Lafayette, CO and Edward Whalen of Watertown, NY as well as many nieces, Jana Whalen, Julie Whalen of Lafayette, CO and Brenda Cavallario, Watertown and nephews, Brian Whalen and Peter Cavallario, Watertown. Robert was predeceased by his daughter Nancy Whalen Snyder.
He was a graduate of Immaculate Heart Academy in Watertown, NY. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines in 1945 during World War II and attended schools in Sheepshead Bay and Kings Point, New York before sailing on Merchant Marine Ships and Army Transport Ships, he then worked for Western Electric before joining his father in the family business, J.J. Whalen & Sons Food Distributors.
He moved his family to Orlando, Florida in 1959, joining Frito Lay/PepsiCo for several years prior to retiring. His next move was to Palm Coast where he enjoyed many great years of tennis and also traveling as well as volunteering at the Flagler County Humane Society and Meals on Wheels. There will be a private family service. Burial will be at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
