Hepsiabeth Elizabeth Smith was born in Warren County, Indiana, March 24, 1847, and died at her home in Brook, Indiana, December 9, 1923, at the age of 76 years, 8 months, and 15 days.

She was married to Thomas Martin October 19, 1873. To this union was born nine children, all survive her except Mrs. Effie DeWees who died September 17, 1918.
They spent their entire married life in Newton county.

Mrs. Martin was a member of the Christian Church since early youth and took an active part in the work until her death.

Surviving are four sons and four daughters: Charles, Ernest, Thaddeus, Andrew, Mrs. Rosa Dean, Mrs. Clara Kough, Mrs. Edna Wynne, and Mrs. Lillie Hamacher.
The funeral service was held in the Christian Church of which she was a member, the Rev. Dunkleberger officiating.

NOTE: We don't know for sure how she spelled her first name. We have spelled it the way that is one the headstone. However, we feel that it could be spelled the same way that the name appears in the Bible and that is Hephzibah.
