Georg was of the Hohenzollern dynasty, he was margrave and elector of Brandenburg and duke of Prussia from 1619 until his death. His reign was marked by ineffective governance during the Thirty Years' War. He was the father of Frederick William, the "Great Elector".

The photo on the right show the coffin in which Georg von Brandenburg was buried inside the Royal crypt of the cathedral. In 1933 (for the 600th Anniversary of the cathedral) the sarcophagus was restored and displayed in the choir of the church, while the margrave's remains were kept buried inside the crypt. During WW II when the cathedral was totally destroyed, this ornate coffin was lost. The crypts were filled with debris and sealed forever. Whose remains are still underneath the church is unknown at this point.
