Chun an nglóir Dé agus an onóir na hÉireann

Called Terry, he was 1 of 11 children of Michael & Jane (née Duff) Sherlock of Skerries. John Terrence & a brother who also had the same first name, John Luke, were both known by their middle names, Terry & Luke.

Terry was a committed Rebuplican who became a soldier in the Irish Republican Army while still a teen. He was unwavering in his determination to free his nation from the enemy occupiers who persecuted his countrymen and raped Ireland of her resources.

As part of the Easter Rising young Terry Sherlock fought valiantly at the Battle of Ashbourne under the command of Thomas Ashe & Dick Mulchay. After the glorious rebellion, Terry was captured and sent in chains to Wakefield Prison in the enemy's homeland, a Prisoner of War. After his release, he returned home, picked up his weapon and resumed the fight for a free and united Ireland.

In 1920, the enemy attempts to kill and terrorize the people of Ireland reached a new low when the very dregs of England's slums and institutions were scraped clean of their filth, dressed in mismatched uniforms, given weapons and sent to Ireland.

On the night of October 27th, this band of sanctioned, murderous, criminals, the bloody black and tans, entered the town of Skerries. Terry was in his family's home that evening, asleep, when the terrorists surrounded the house and demanded Terry come out. Against his family's wishes, he did, assuring his parents all the while everything would be fine and not to worry. When he did not return after many hours, his father Michael & younger sister Alice set out to find where he was taken.

In the early morning hours of Qctober 28th, Alice found her brother Terry's lifeless body in a field, bloody and riddled with bullets. Not one of the murderers was ever tried for the war crimes of which they were guilty.

✞ John Terrence Sherlock is buried at Holmpatrick Graveyard in Skerries. The fight for which he gave his life, a free and united Ireland, continues to this day.
