Mary Simpson Bibble Bryan is the daughter of Colonel Samuel Simpson Biddle 1811-1872 and Mary Bryan Williams 1819-1843; the wife of Dr. James Pettigrew Bryan. Dr. Bryan is the son of John Heritage Bryan 1798-1870 and Mary Williams Shepard 1801 – 1881.

A distinguished lawyer and prominent in his generation. He was born in New Bern in 1798, graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1815, was a member of the State Senate of North Carolina in 1823 and 1824, represented his district in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses at Washington, declined re-election,and located in Raleigh
where he practiced his profession. John H. Bryan was twenty-seven years of age when he entered the Federal Congress, and had the distinction of being the youngest member of that body during the presidency of John Quincy Adams.
His mother Mary William Shepard was born 1-21-1801 in New Bern Craven County N.C. and died on 7-13-1881 in Raleigh Wake County N.C.
