In the 1730s and early 1740s she enjoyed a close friendship with Lord Hervey. In 1743 Horace Walpole reported that her marriage to Duke Adolphus Frederick of Holstein-Gottorp, later king of Sweden, was being discussed at the initiative of Russia, but Caroline remained unmarried.
