Shreveport, LA - Church Services for Ben Daniel Atchley, Jr., 67, will be held on Friday November 1, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Paul Martin, Rector, officiating. Followed by Graveside Services at Forest Park East - St. Vincent Avenue. Visitation will be held on Wed. Oct. 30, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. at Osborn Funeral Home.
Dan was born on Feb. 17, 1946 in Monroe, Louisiana and grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana, as the eldest son of the family with one sister. He played football in High School under head coach Nicki Lester, and graduated from C.E. Byrd in 1964. He then played football for Kilgore College, served in the National Guard Reserves for 6 years, and graduated from U.S.L. with a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering. He joined his father's business in 1973 and later took over as president of Atchley & Atchley, Inc., a Civil Engineering and Land Surveying firm. Dan designed many roads, drainage systems, utility lines, parking lots, and subdivisions in the Shreveport - Bossier City area for over 40 years as a respected and honorable member of the community.
He loved hunting season, and generally being in the woods when it was cold. Sitting out by a campfire under the stars is where he truly wanted to be. He loved to laugh and always tried to find humor in the little things. He was a loving father, grandfather, and a dedicated family man.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Ben Daniel Atchley, Sr. and Helen Ford Atchley. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Patricia Anne Lowery Atchley; son, Brian Daniel Atchley and wife, Delise; grandson, Barrett Daniel Atchley; sister, Joe Anne Ramsey and husband, Johnson; nieces, Helen Parrish Ramsey, Jordan Paige Hoffpauir and husband, Chase; grandnieces, Carmen Anne Namie, Helen Ramsey Hoffpauir; and grandnephew, Hayden Ramsey Hoffpauir.
Pallbearers for the funeral services are Butch McKissack, Ronnie Parnell, Jay Slater, Laird Evans, Johnson Ramsey and Chase Hoffpauir.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made in Dan's name to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 275 Southfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71105, St. Jude, or to the charity of the donor's choice .
