Zacharias/Zachary or Zachery Reidel was born in Lebanon County, PA, the youngest of at least 10 children of William and Mary Reidel. His father died when he was a toddler. In Oct. 1861, at barely age 13, he enlisted along with his older brother Israel Reidel in the 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry. His brother joined Company A, and Zachary joined the band as a musician. He mustered out five months later on March 18, 1862. He re-enlisted on Aug 4, 1862, in Harrisburg, PA, as a musician in Company K, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and mustered out on May 29, 1863. He re-enlisted on Jan. 13, 1864, in Philadelphia, PA, as a Private in Company L, 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. When the war was over, he went on to have a long career in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1891 as an Ordnance Sergeant.

Detroit Free Press, Feb. 16, 1910, p.3. "Zachary Reidell, aged 62 years, who died last Friday in his residence, 109 Dragoon avenue, was given a military funeral Monday, officers of the Twenty-Sixth Infantry at Fort Wayne being present at the services.
