Benjamin Abner 89, of Savannah, GA, died Friday, October 12, 2013 at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral Services: 10:00 AM Friday, October 18, 2013 at First African Baptist Church, St. Helena Island. Burial will follow in Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors.

Brother Benjamin Abner was born May 8, 1924, in Savannah, Georgia, the son of the late Gilyard and Dora "Lottie" Simmons. He was reared by and assumed the name of the late Mattie Abner. He departed this life on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Westview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Savannah, Georgia.

He received his education in the public schools of Chatham County, Georgia.

In 1943, Benjamin joined the United States Army, and served his country honorably for three years. While in the Army, he served as a Machine Gunner (Anti-Aircraft) , and was a member of Battery C of the 933rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, in the Asiatic Pacific Theater Operations.

On December 24, 1949, he was united in marriage to the former Miss Virgie Mae Jones.

Seeking better working conditions, he moved to New York where he worked as a Building Services Maintenance Supervisor until he retired. While in New York, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and became a communicant of the Catholic Church. After retiring and his health began to decline, he returned to Savannah, Georgia to be nearer to his family.

In addition to his biological parents and the parent who reared him, Benjamin was preceded in death by his wife; brothers: James Holmes, Lawrence Coleman, Jerome Simmons, Robert Simmons and Paul Simmons; sisters-in-law, Leola Powell and Elizabeth Holmes; a brother-in-law, Jefferson Jenkins and a great-grandson, Brandon L. Warren.

He was a kind and loving man who dearly loved his family and one who will truly be missed.

His memory will forever be cherished by his three children: Doris (Arthur) Frazier, Linda (Jimmie) Sams, Yvonne (Willie) Warren, all of Savannah, GA ; two brothers, Joe L. Simmons of St. Helena Island, SC and Benjamin Powell of Jacksonville, FL; his sisters: Bernice (Deacon Robert) Middleton, Catherine (Willie) Speaks and Louise Jenkins all of St. Helena Island, SC; his sisters-in-law Clara Bell Brown of St. Helena Island, SC, Mary Ruth Simmons and Marion Simmons both of Savannah, GA seven grandchildren: David (Deidra) Frazier of Charlotte, NC, Janice (Dennis) Baker, Arthur (Shelia) Frazier Sean (Angela) Brooks, Vir-Kisha Warren, Willesha Warren all of Savannah, GA and Darnell (Vershauna) Brooks of Tallahassee, FL; , nine great-granddaughters, six great-grandsons; five great great-grand- daughters, six great-great-grandsons; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins including a very dear cousin, Albertha Trappio of Savannah, GA; and many caring friends.
