2nd Lt Hulme #0107092
MOS: 1301 Basic Engineer, Construction and Equipment Officer.

John was born and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He attended high school at St Rapheal's Academy and Pawtucket High School. He was the starting quarterback of the football team and made All American.
After graduation John attended and graduated from Bridgeport University, where he was the
starting quarterback of the football team. John was a member of the US Marine ROTC, while at Bridgeport.
He enlisted for extended active-duty 9 July 1968, at the Hartford Recruiting Office in CT.
"He was in ROTC, and I remembered that those were turbulent times.
He was very nervous when graduation came because we had heard that there could be some sort of violent protests. It was suggested to him that he not wear his uniform, but he would have none of it. He was hell bound proud to be a Marine and didn't care who liked it. When he went up in full dress to receive his diploma a majority of the professors and
students turned their backs, and many walked out. He remained proud. He always wanted to be a Marine." From his niece.
After graduating from Bridgeport University, John and Ellen M Bratter were married 8 June 1968 and moved to New Jersey.
Arriving in Vietnam 27 March 1969, John was assigned to Charlie Company, 11th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. John died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body from hostile rocket fire while manning a defensive line position when hostile incoming mortars were fired at Vandergrift Combat Base and 16 kilometers southwest of Cam Lo.
John was married and served his country for about 3 years and was KIA #43,607.
He had been in Vietnam for 3 months and 3 days and was 22 years, 10 months and 26 days old.
Survived by his wife, Ellen M Hulme and a newborn son John IV (he never met) of 49-B Meadowbrooks P1, Maplewood, New Jersey and his parents, William J and Rena L Hulme of 43 Clifford St, Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

His son (John) made a movie about his search to find the father he never had called "Unknown Soldier: Search For A Father." HBO bought the rights to the documentary and aired it a couple of times in 2004 and 2005.
