Photographer, long-time associate of famed Civil War era photographer Mathew Brady and mentor of Andrew J. Russell. E. G. Fowx was a free lance civilian photographer who took many photographs during the Civil War. Fowx sold many his negatives to Mathew Brady who subsequently published them under his own name. In February of 1863, A. J. Russell hired Fowx for $300 to teach him the collodion process of wet-plate photography. Russell's first photographs were taken on a camera borrowed from Fowx. Photographs by Egbert Guy Fowx can be found in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (New York 7th Regiment Officers, ca. 1863)and the New York Public Library.
