He entered the Red Army in 1920 and received his military training from the Frunze Military Academy. During the Second World War he served as commander of the 63rd, 71st and 36th combat divisions. In April 1944 he was awarded the rank of "Hero of the Soviet Union" for his role in the capture of Sevastopol from German occupation. Following the war he served as commander of the Siberian and Kiev Military Districts and as head of Soviet forces in Germany. He was awarded the rank of "Marshal of the Soviet Union" in 1968. He was a five time recipient of the "Order of Lenin," a three time recipient of the "Order of the Red Banner," a two time recipient of the "Gold Star" and a recipient of the "Order of the October Revolution."
