He is a relative of mine and he is the son of George Washington Holland (Memorial # 41149011) and Dora Victoria (McCrary) Holland (Memorial # 41149205). Grady Holland was born in Etowah County, in the Smith Institute Community near Sardis, Etowah Co., AL and he died in Gadsden, Etowah County, Alabama.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Liberty United Baptist Church, Boaz (near Sardis), for Grady Holland, 89, Gadsden, who died Thursday, July 26, 2001, from complications of lung cancer and pneumonia. The Revs. Charlie Bowen, Wayne White and Kenneth Fry will officiate. Burial will be in Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Holland was born Oct. 26, 1911, in the Smith Institute Community, near Sardis, and was a lifelong resident of Etowah County, living most of his adult life in Gadsden. He joined Liberty United Baptist Church in DeKalb County as a youth, where he remained a member throughout his lifetime.

Mr. Holland was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Elizabeth Handy Holland; parents, George Washington and Dora Holland; an four sisters and three brothers.

He is survived by his son, Wayne Holland, and daughter-in-law, Karen Holland, Kennesaw, Ga.; daughter, Sherron Holland Battles, and son-in-law, Joseph Battles, Southside; three granddaughters, Heather Holland and Ashley Holland, Kennesaw, Ga., and Jennifer Battles, Southside; and sister-in-law, Louise Holland, Sardis. He also leaves three special friends, Irvin and Sis McCrary and Ruth Butler.

Pallbearers will be Irvin McCrary, Billy Peterson, Cleo "Pete" Peterson, Jr., Ricky Holland, Dean Guice, Lowell White, Dick Jones and Jim Scott.

Honorary pallbearers are the nurses, nurses' aides and all the health care providers of the Rehabilitation Hall of McGuffeys Health Care Center and the seventh floor of the Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church.
