Rufus Martin Cannon was born on April 16, 1899 in rural Roane County, Tennessee, the son of Charles Franklin "Frank" Cannon (1879–1926) and Mary Emma (Cox) Cannon (1880–1963).

He was married 1st to Clara Mai Thorne (1898–1948), who was born and died in Davidson County, Tennessee, the daughter of James A Thorne (1851–1920) and Rolleen (Reeder) Thorne (1864–1911). Rufus was married 2nd to S Madelene Day (1913–2004).

A pressman for Newspaper Printing Corporation and living at 1708 22nd Avenue North in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, Rufus was 67 years old and married when he had a heart attack and died at Baptist Hospital on December 18, 1966. {His obituary listed him as dying at home.}

Survivors included his wife Mrs Madelene Day Cannon, daughter Mrs Audrey Cannon Spiceland Sr, sisters Mrs F M Gebhardt and Miss Ruby Cannon, brother Charles F Cannon and a Spiceland grandson.

Funeral Services were held on December 20th at McCormick Funeral Home, and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville, with Honorary Pallbearers who included - but were not limited to - employees of Newspaper Printing Corporation and members of the local Pressmen's Union.
