Louise, my maternal grandmother, fibbed about her age for years, we think she may have even forgotten her true age. It wasn't until I was doing some geneology searching in 2013 that I found her family tree info within the Druin Collection which showed her true date of birth as even 2 years earlier than Mom & Barbara thought (see mass card discrepancy). The day of month was also always off as we thought/celebrated her birthday later in Sept. than the 6th - I think the 16th. The mystery date of birth started at least around the time Louise and Grandpa Dave Murray were dating. She didn't want him to know she was older so she lopped off about 5 years to be closer to his age since he was born in '05. Her sisters all were envious of her as Dave Murray caught the ladies' eyes back in the day. As a Canadian citizen (and eventually dual US-Canadian citizen), it was a little easier back then to fudge the numbers. Louise met Dave 'accidentally on purpose' by shoving a potted plant off the balcony of an upper flat in which she lived, the lower flat occupied by two sisters Dave was dating. Prior to that, Louise relocated to Buffalo from Rawdon Quebec CA (small town about 45 min from Montreal) to attend nursing school, her immigration record sent to me by mom's cousin Robert Duffy showed she went to stay with her mother's sister, Aunt Susan Nolan on Linwood in Buffalo. Louise, age 19, came to Buffalo along with sister Anna to train in nursing, no longer wanting to be a Canada Bell telephone operator, as most her sisters were. Anna quit after 6-12 mo. and returned to Montreal. Louise stuck it out. She eventually met Dave Murray, an electrician by trade who worked for may years at Twin Coach, a bus manufacturer defunct for decades now, he also did home wiring for my great grandfather Casper Roetzer, "Mr Kensington" since he built so many homes on or around Kensington Ave in Buffalo. Louise worked as an R.N. in Buffalo, training at Sisters Hospital, worked at Meyer Hospital (today Erie County Medical Center) thereafter. She left Meyer to work in a large NYC hospital, Bellevue, to study communicable diseases, but came back to Buffalo. She met Dave sometime after returning. She grew up on a large farm her father Jerry had, I think that he inherited from his father Michael unless he bought land outright from others who couldn't pay the taxes. Her grandfather Michael (& wife Margaret nee Donahoe) came to Rawdon Quebec after being with relatives in Springfield MA for a time, after emmigrating from Ireland. Her grandfather Michael came to Rawdon to take advantage of the land grants. Mary Louisa Alida Ryan is her full given name, none of this dang Irish family, especially the girls went by their given names. Louise was one of 13 children, Mary Jane (Jenny the oldest), Louise #7 and the youngest, perhaps brother George, but Evelyn ended up being the last to go, in 2008. In their early years, Louise and Dave rented a house on Dewitt St. on the west side of Buffalo that was owned by Dave's father Francis (Frank). After the birth of Barbara in 1934 and Patricia in 1939, it was time for new digs but also his siblings complained about father Frank letting Dave and Louise live there 'rent-free'. Frank let them do so since they worked hard to improve the house, stripping/replacing wallpaper, fixing electrical, plumbing etc. They didn't want to deal with criticism so Louise located their newish house and they moved around 1941 to 30 Coralwood Ct. off Kensington Ave/Century in Cheektowaga NY, which stands today - owned by a friend or acquaintance of my nephew Jeremy, he works with. The Murray's owned for many years a cottage about an hour from Buffalo at a small community somewhat in between S. Dayton NY and Silver Creek, the lake dubbed East Mud Lake. I have many fond memories of trips to the 'lake', some not so fond. For example, Grandma Murray always seemed to think strawberries grown in fields surrounding the cottage association community as free & fair game. As kids we had no idea what we were getting into. One time, an angry farmer caught us all literally 'red' handed picking berries; he came hauling over the hill, full throttle in his tractor, I seem to recall a shotgun in hand! We all scrambled and hopped into her '65 white Olds Jetstar 88 4 door sedan (white with teal vinyl interior), and if that was full, your only hope was a free seat in mom & dad's '66 gold Cadillac Sedan de Ville. We tore outta there in clouds of dust, with what we thought was barely out lives! It's possible now that I think about it that she in fact stayed to tell the farmer she 'didn't think it would hurt anything' and offered to pay for them. The former recollection seems a lot more dramatic. Perhaps the reality was somewhere in between. Heck I was pretty young and pretty scared! Louise enjoyed family, cigarettes, General Hospital (God help you if you made any 'racket' while her 'program' was on!) Fast forward decades... unfortunately with her death a couple years after Dave's passing, the cottage fell into the hands of my cousin Erin McCarthy Taylor and because of many things mom's sister Barbara and husband John McCarthy did, that was the end of family get-togethers at E Mud Lake and relationship with them.
