Charles Joseph Tolbert, Sr., of Kilmarnock, died at home of cancer on October 7, 2013. He was the third from the oldest of nine children born to Cecelia and Theodore Tolbert and was born and raised in Washington D.C.
Charles attended Catholic school in Washington D.C. He was ambitious and had an entrepreneurial nature starting with his first job of flipping donuts at the age of eight.
At a young age, he also cut fabric for his uncle who owned American Garment Manufacturing Co. in Washington.
He was a self- made man and owned and operated many successful businesses, including several automotive repair shops, a plumbing business, and a generator sales and service business. He retired from Auxiliary Electric Power Company after seventeen successful years.
Charles enjoyed reading and his favorite topic was history. His favorite pastime was automobile racing, and although he had not raced for many years, he had raced Modifieds from a young age and later switched to racing Sprint cars.
He is survived by his loving companion and soul mate of 33 years, Karen; sons, Charles
Tolbert, Jr. and Marc Tolbert; daughters, Jody Tolbert Hardwick, Kimberley Tolbert Eakins, and Mara Tolbert; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 18, 2013 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Kilmarnock, Va.
