The son of John & Lydia (Shoop) Warfel, in 1860 he was living with his farming family in Jefferson Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania (although the entry is in the midst of Jackson Township but marked as Jefferson). The family is in that census as "Werfel."
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Harrisburg February 24, 1864, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. K, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865. He is in the company register as "Warfel."
He married Sarah Shoop and fathered the children you see linked below. He reportedly died from a farming accident, but no newspaper account of that event was found in any online newspaper archive.
On July 19, 1890, Sarah applied for a widow's pension and received it.
