Ballard Preston Cook served as a Union soldier in the Civil War, then worked as a farmer. He also served as the door keeper at the West Virginia Senate in 1871, Sheriff of Wyoming County, a merchant and a Postmaster.

He died at age 60 from heart failure due to Bright's Disease (per WV Register of Deaths, Wyoming County, WV, 1901, Page 28, Record 324).
