She was born as Afke Spaan, eldest child of Simon Spaan & Rena Visser. She immigrated with her parents & siblings in 1906 and adopted the name Effie. Effie married Jacob Kniff Oct 1, 1911 in Grand Rapids, MI. They had 2 sons & 1 daughter. Effie could speak 5 languages which included Friesland, Dutch, German, English and Spanish.
