He was born as Sietze de Vries in Schoterland, Friesland, Netherlands. He was the son of Gatze "Walter" de Vries & Geeske "Grace" Joukes Schoppen. His father immigrated to America in 1910 and about a year later Charles, his mother & siblings immigrated. He adopted the name Charles. He married Marie Spaan on May 12, 1917 in Grand Rapids, MI. In 1918 they moved to California & settled in San Pedro. They had 2 daughters & 1 son. Charles founded the San Pedro Sheet Metal Works which he operated for 18 months and sold the business. He then started the Marine Sheet Metal Works in 1926.
