Elizabeth is one of 9 children of Master Mariner John & Mary (née Morgan) Gowan of Skerries, Ireland. Elizabeth, called Lizzie as a girl back in Skerries, was 16 years old when her father, Capt. John Gowan was lost at sea with his ship Reaper & all his crew off the coast of Angelsey, North Wales.

Prior to her marriage, she primarily used the Gowan form of her Gowan / McGowan surname.

She married Thomas McCaffrey in 1886, the same year they both emigrated to America. It's believed they married in Skerries before leaving Ireland. They settled in Brooklyn and had 8 children.

Within a few years both Thomas' brother Frank McCaffrey and Elizabeth's brother John McGowan had emigrated and were living with them. Elizabeth's brother Capt. Michael McGowan arrived in Brooklyn in 1911.

She is known to have taken at least one trip back to Ireland, in 1914, staying at the home of her niece Elizabeth Mansfield in Sandymount. Lizzie travelled to Ireland to act as an escort for niece Nance McGowan's emigration to her new life in America. Both Nance McGowan & Elizabeth Mansfield were her brother Capt. Michael's daughters.
