Early Life: Born fifth of ten children: Bessie Cook, Flora Beaver, Juanita Moore, George, Frank, Margie Nobles, Betty Reed, Bobby, and O.J. (Buddy).
Life's Work/Service/Interests: Ernest worked a short time at a textile mill and then decided to "Join the Navy and see the World" at age 17. He loved the Navy! In 1951, Ernest married Idell Roland in Perry, Georgia and their life as a young Navy couple began. When he was married he acquired his second family who loved him like the brother he was and he returned that love with all his heart.
They were sealed in the Provo Temple November 18, 1978. They lived in many places: North Carolina, California, Washington, where he was on the faculty of the University of Washington in Seattle as a Naval Instructor. He served on many ships including the USS Bainbridge (CGN 25); the first nuclear destroyer. Ernest became a father the first tour in Japan on August 24, 1963 of son, James Michael, after 12 years of marriage. It was the most wonderful day! He was very close to him, they loved walking and talking together. Ernest retired after 31 years of honorable service January 1, 1977. He went to work for Orem City as a warehouseman and one year later as the Purchasing Agent. He retired February 1993. Ernest enjoyed hiking, climbing Timp, and Mount Fujiyama in Japan. He loved preparing, planting, and picking the garden; hillbilly music, having the TV on and napping. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he loved home teaching. He was a veil worker at the Timpanogos Temple for many years. Ernest became a grandfather October 18, 2006 to Matthew James Oliver who became his adored climbing, jumping boy. In the early morning hours of June 2, 2009 beloved husband, sweetheart, and best friend, Ernest Hoke Oliver, peacefully passed away in the ICU of Timpanogos Regional Hospital after a 22 day valiant struggle with a broken hip, heart attacks and other complications. He was 80.
Survived By: His wife, Idell; his son, James; his daughter-in-law, Susie; grandson, Matthew; sisters: Evelene Newsome, Peggy Roland, Faye (Stuart) Heimdal, Diane (Terry) Timmons, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved friends.
