John was born in Grainger County, Tennessee. He attended local schools and at age 15 he attended Greenville College in Illinois. During the Civil War he served as an officer in Company I of the Fifty-ninth Tennessee Infantry.

After the war he operated businesses in Newman, Georgia; Morristown, Tennessee; and Carroll County, Georgia.

He moved to Jasper, Alabama in 1873 where he operated a lumber mill. In 1884 he was elected to the Alabama State Legislature and served one term. In 1886 he was elected Walker County Judge of Probate and served for successive terms until 1912.

John married Carrie Long 19 Sep 1866 in Carroll County, Georgia. There were six children.
